Women enjoy porn too; men act in porn too

"Sir: I considered waiting for a woman to reply to Thomas Swann's letter ("Violent pornography devalues the rights and desires of women", 11 September), but since he chose to speak for all women I don't feel it inappropriate to speak for just a few.

More than one of my female friends have admitted an appreciation for erotica of a sadistic or masochistic bent, and those preferences (which I respect) involve in varying degrees the sexual objectification of both men and women. It is hard to know for sure, but it seems that men are the recipients of this violence in roughly equal proportion to women. In comparison to mainstream newspapers and magazines this seems particularly egalitarian.

To assume that this "violent porn" is the cause, not a symptom, of the impulses that led to Jane Longhurst's death is a leap of the imagination comparable to computer games causing crime, or horror films causing murders. Men and women will always see objects of desire in each other, but to think that a sex object is all that they see is to ignore the influence of family, of friends, of society, and of humanity itself."

What Is This About?

The idea for this blog is for it to be a list of blogs written by people who oppose the governments proposed legislation on the possession of violent pornography all on one day.

It doesn't matter why you oppose the proposal, just that you do, the blog can be written any time between now and the date chosen, all we will need is the link to your blog entry.

What you write in your blog is up to you, it can be about how the proposals may affect you, what you feel about the consultation, what you feel about the people who have pushed for this legislation or a combination. It will be your blog opposing the proposals that will be listed here.

There are two dates that would seem to be appropriate; the 9th of October when parliament returns after the summer break, or the 15th of November when the new session of parliament starts and the Queen gives her speech.

If you'd like to blog and take part please comment on which day you would prefer and more details will follow.
